You make such a good point, because when you crunch the numbers, 100 paid subscribers (which by all accounts is a lot of people) ... when you weigh the work and marketing that would go into it, it’s just not making sense, especially for freelance writers who can make more from a single commission in a publication
For sure! I'm at a point where paywalls are worth it for me, but it's taken a lot of time (18 months) to get to that point, and I was fortunate to have fewer commitments and barriers to developing on Substack that others don't have in the same way.
I think for many people, something free that uses other formats to earn is worthwhile. Unless you can commit 10+ hours a week to Substack, odds are that the income will never equate to more than the minimum wage... And even then it takes a long time!
